Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies has welcomed news that an additional £3m has been awarded for an ambitious scheme to redevelop Denbigh's North Wales Hospital site and hopes the funding boost will result in work proceeding soon.
An application by Denbighshire-based Jones Bros to redevelop the 50.6-acre site of the Grade Two Star-listed former psychiatric hospital was approved unanimously by Denbighshire County Council’s Planning Committee on September 8th 2021.
James is supportive of the plans, which include the building of 300 new houses, 34 new apartments and facilities for local businesses, shops and leisure, and has previously met Jones Bros on a number of occasions to discuss the proposals.
He is therefore pleased that the project has now been provisionally allocated a total of £7m via the North Wales Growth Deal, subject to business case approval, and has expressed hope that this means that work could proceed soon.
He said:
“The proposals for this site are exciting and will benefit Denbigh and the surrounding areas greatly.
“This hospital site project is expected to boost the local economy by £75 million and create 100-200 much needed jobs in the area for the next ten years, and at the same time provide the area with much-needed high quality housing.
“I am therefore delighted that the project has received this additional funding from the North Wales Growth Deal, which will hopefully lead to work on site starting soon.”
James added:
“The Growth Deal is a £1 billion investment to the region’s economy, £240m of which is funded by the UK Government and the Welsh Government”.
“As well as helping the North Wales Hospital project, the Growth Deal will help a range of other projects across the Vale of Clwyd and North Wales more widely.”
Jones Bros Chairman, Huw Jones, said:
"We at Jones Bros have been working on this project for the past 4 years and are delighted to have the support of the Growth Deal, this will provide guaranteed workload for our staff in North Wales over the coming years. We are looking forward to working in partnership with DCC and the North Wales Growth Fund."
