Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies visited Prestatyn and District u3a (University of the Third Age) recently to give a talk to members on dementia and research into the condition.
The u3a is a growing UK-wide self-help organisation which supports continued learning for pleasure. Its groups come together to develop new skills and interests and it is run by members for members.
At their regular meetings, the group have social events and talks from people from all walks of life, and James was invited along to speak about dementia.
As well as being an MP, James has worked as a doctor within the NHS since 2004 and was a clinical champion for dementia for a number of years.
He has also repeatedly raised in Parliament the need for improved services for those with dementia.
Following his talk, he said:
"It was a real pleasure to attend the meeting of Prestatyn and District u3a and to give a talk on dementia and research into the condition.
“Dementia is a complex condition which sadly affects so many families.
“Getting the right treatment, help, advocacy and support is vital both for the person diagnosed with dementia and their loved ones.
“I hope I provided a good insight into the condition and why research is so vital. Last year, as a Dementia Research Champion, I supported Alzheimer’s Research UK in their quest to encourage more people with and without dementia to register to take part in clinical trials across the nation, and ultimately find life-changing treatments sooner.
“Dementia is the greatest long term health challenge we face in the UK, and I am particularly keen to help ensure everyone who receives a dementia diagnosis in Vale of Clwyd is made aware of the research opportunities available to them. Research has the power to transform the lives of everyone affected by dementia – but it will take all of us to bring about the life- changing treatments people desperately need.”
James also spoke about older people in general and the support and services they require, and what is currently available to them.
Chris Winner, who is Chair of Prestatyn and District u3a, said:
“We would like to thank James for attending our meeting and for presenting such an informative talk on dementia and dementia research. It was very well received by members.”
The u3a is open to the retired or semi-retired. Visitors can come to two meetings before deciding to join our group. Annual membership is £12. As a member you can join as many Interest Groups as you want and attend monthly talks.
