Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies has praised a St Asaph-based business, which is going from strength to strength and has been selected to supply equipment for Challenger 3 (a planned fourth generation British main battle tank in development for the British Army), after visiting them last week.
During his visit to Gooch and Housego (G&H) on Friday, as well as discussing national issues such as defence spending and the change in military thinking as a result of the abhorrent invasion of Ukraine, the main focus was on the challenges facing G&H in the local area.
Speaking following the visit, James said:
“It was great to visit G&H in St Asaph on Friday and to find out more about the business and its future plans. The company is going from strength to strength, winning business relating to its core activity of providing equipment for armoured fighting vehicles. Of particular note was G&H being selected as the provider of the driver’s periscope system and the gunner’s auxiliary sight for the Challenger 3 programme.
“As well as continued success in its traditional markets, G&H St Asaph has enjoyed significant success in using its engineering skills to diversify into other optics and photonics fields. It has recently completed a project in support of satellite to earth laser communications and the development of new capabilities in support of the UK’s future weapons programmes.
"G&H St Asaph continues to expand and needs highly skilled individuals to help them continue to grow. I was interested to hear of the difficulties they are having in finding candidates with the right technical skills. This is an issue that the UK Government’s focus on STEM subjects seeks to correct for the future.
