On Friday 3 February, James Davies MP joined members of staff from National Trust Cymru to plant a blossom tree in Prestatyn town centre to bring more people closer to nature on their doorstep.
The planting is part of National Trust Cymru’s #GwleddYGwanwyn #BlossomWatch campaign and commitment to provide opportunities for more people to connect with nature, beauty and history, wherever they are in Wales.
As part of the campaign, the conservation charity is working with Members of Parliament and Members of the Senedd across Wales to plant blossom trees in locations of their choice within their constituency or region – helping to develop blossom spaces that respect local setting, spirit of place and bring people and nature together.
Once established, the trees will bloom each spring, bringing the joyful sight of blush-tinted blooms to the nation’s community spaces and encourage a beneficial everyday connection with nature, culture and each other.
Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies said:
‘It has been proven that green spaces encourage more social interaction and a stronger sense of community. I think it is true to say that during the pandemic we all gained a greater appreciation for our green spaces.
‘Blossom trees are an attractive feature and their loss over the years has often reduced the beauty of neighbourhoods and meant fewer habitats for wildlife. I therefore commend National Trust's commitment to bring blossom back to areas that really need it over the next five years, and I am really pleased that Prestatyn is one of the areas that has been chosen to benefit from this initiative.
‘The planting of the tree will enhance Prestatyn and I look forward to watching the tree flourish over the years.’
Ceri Williams, General Manager at National Trust Cymru’s Penryhyn Castle added:
‘Through the #blossomwatch campaign we are proudly bringing the beauty of nature closer to everyone in Wales.’
Thank you to James Davies MP for joining National Trust Cymru in planting a blossom tree today. Those who live and visit Prestatyn can watch the tree grow and experience the joy of nature as it blossoms each spring.’
