With over a million pensioner households in the UK missing out on Pension Credit, Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies is encouraging older people in the constituency to check to see if they are eligible.
Pension Credit provides extra money to help with living costs if you’re over State Pension age and on a low income. It can also help with housing costs such as ground rent or service charges.
However, James is concerned that many older residents in the Vale of Clwyd on lower incomes may not be claiming the pension credit they are entitled to. This may be because they are not aware that these benefits are available, they may think they wouldn’t qualify, they may be put off by the process of applying, or feel reluctant to ask for help.
James said:
“Up to £3.5 billion of benefits aimed at older people on low incomes in the UK go unclaimed every year. Recent ‘take-up’ figures show that over a million pensioner households are missing out on Pension Credit- which amounts to around 2 in 5 of those who are entitled to receive it. These benefits can make all the difference and help older people stay independent and healthy.
“If you’re eligible, Pension Credit will not only give you a bit of extra cash, it could also help you get other benefits too. It’s unlikely you’ll have to pay Council Tax (unless other people live with you); if you rent your home, you may get your rent paid in full by Housing Benefit; and if you own your home, you may be eligible for help with mortgage interest, ground rent and service charges.
“Other benefits include free dental treatment, help towards the cost of glasses, and a Cold Weather Payment of £25 when the temperature is 0°C or below for 7 days in a row.”
James added:
“I know it can be very tough financially for some older people and I am therefore keen to ensure that those eligible for this payment do not miss out.
“AgeUK have produced a very useful guide for anyone wanting further information on Pension Credit and to find out whether they can claim this additional money. This is available on the AgeUK website: Pension credit advice | Age UK
“Alongside the Pension Credit guide, AgeUK also have a benefits calculator on their website which can help older people find out what benefits they could be owed. It’s free to use and any details provided are kept anonymous.
“They provide further support through their free advice line on 0800 055 6112 (Lines are open 8am-7pm, 365 days a year) and have specialist advisers at their local AgeUK branches.”
