The Conservative Group on Denbighshire County Council yesterday supported a vote of no confidence in Denbighshire County Council’s Leader, Cllr Jason McLellan, and his Cabinet.
The motion was defeated by 25 votes to 17, with 3 abstentions.
All Labour and Plaid Cymru members and the two Green Party members voted against the motion.
Commenting yesterday on the result of the vote, the Conservative Group stated:
“Contrary to the claims made in the meeting by the Leader, this motion was not brought forward for political gain but because residents are sick of the failings of this administration and have told us that they want change.
“The Leader of the Council and the Leader of Plaid Cymru tried to lay blame on the previous cabinet for the failings of the new waste system! The truth of the matter is that the previous cabinet has had no input for over two years now.
“During those two years, much has changed and many concerns have been raised, from far and wide. The current leadership were repeatedly challenged during that time over their decision to proceed with the new waste system despite escalating costs, but they failed to act.
“Any competent leadership would assess and reassess the basis of such major alterations to a key council service, particularly taking into account outside scrutiny. If still choosing to proceed, it would use the two years to model and best perfect their roll-out, taking into account the latest information and feedback from all.
“The motion was defeated because Plaid Cymru and the Green Party gave Labour their full support. In contrast a substantial 17 members listened to residents and voted for the removal of the Leader and his Cabinet.
“It was our duty on behalf of residents to challenge such repeatedly poor leadership at Denbighshire County Council. Following today’s vote, it is important that all differences are now put aside and we work together to get Denbighshire County Council back to being the award winning local authority it was only a few years ago.”
