Prestatyn has been celebrating once again after being awarded a Silver Gilt in this year’s Britain in Bloom contest.
Earlier this year the town scooped yet another Gold award in the annual Wales in Bloom contest, and now they have experienced further success in Britain's nationwide gardening competition, ‘Britain in Bloom’.
The contest inspires community groups in towns, cities and villages to make positive changes to their local environment through horticultural, environmental and community action.
Prestatyn was presented with its Silver Gilt award at an awards ceremony in London.
The Judges, Geraldine King and Ann Holland, who visited the town in August, described Prestatyn as “a beautiful and charming historic and coastal town in Wales”.
Their report stated:
“Prestatyn has amazing historical charm from the Roman excavations, commanding views over the bay demonstrating a town steeped in history.
“It was very evidential from our tour the pride and involvement of the community from all backgrounds, ages and the dedication of the Prestatyn in Bloom group of how much they value the town.”
They went on to praise the role played by community groups including at Coed y Morfa Community Woodland, Ffrith Beach common land, the Coronation Gardens, and Pendre Gardens.
They also commended environmental projects and applauded Prestatyn for achieving 80% of recycling targets as a town.
The report stated:
“Some very good environmental projects are in progress including Plastic Free Prestatyn – a quick visit to the Plastic Free Prestatyn Red Boad Café showcasing the commitment from businesses to support this initiative.”
They went on to commend The Terra Cycling Project and The Apple Cart fruit and vegetable shop, which they described as “a brilliant sustainable addition to the High Street”, and also commented on the cleanliness of the town, commenting that they “came across no litter, dog fouling or graffiti on the tour”.
Chair of Prestatyn in Bloom, Dr James Davies MP, said:
“I am delighted that the hard work and dedication of the team of committed volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year has been recognised once again.
“Very many groups from across the whole of the United Kingdom compete to enter Britain in Bloom, so to be nominated a finalist and then be awarded a Silver Gilt, the second highest award, in this prestigious national competition is a remarkable achievement. I thank and congratulate everyone involved.”
