The artistic talents of a St Asaph schoolgirl will be seen throughout the Vale of Clwyd and beyond, after her festive drawing was chosen as the winning design in the annual Christmas card competition of Dr James Davies MP.
As in previous years, the number of entries for 2023 was in the hundreds, and James and his office staff were tasked with the difficult job of choosing an overall winner.
The Christmas card they eventually decided on was designed by Hannah Hazel, of Ysgol Esgob Morgan, St Asaph. It features a large bauble, inside of which are classic Christmas items, including a tree, stocking, candy cane, snow and star. It also features a Christmas greeting in both English and Welsh.
There was a total of 732 entries from nine schools. Individual school winners are: Alex Draper, Ysgol Bodfari; Darcie Hughes, Ysgol Bryn Clwyd; Layla Maguire, Christ the Word School; Sanithi Samakhya Perera, Ysgol Emmanuel; Archie Holmes, Ysgol Frongoch; Isaac H, Ysgol Llywelyn; Reema Bibhkar, Fairholme School; and Sophie Walker, Ysgol Tir Morfa.
James said:
“Each year, the talent of our young people here in the Vale of Clwyd never fails to impress me.
“Receiving all the colourful and creative entries at this exceptionally busy time of the year in the office, really does get us in the festive mood.
“It is always difficult though choosing an overall winner, but we all felt that Hannah’s design stood out from the rest. It really depicts what Christmas is all about.
“I was pleased to meet Hannah at Ysgol Esgob Morgan yesterday (Monday) to congratulate her and thank her for putting together such a wonderful design. I am confident that all the 4,000 recipients of my card this year will enjoy her artistic creativity. The design has already been shared with the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and the Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who signed the card for Hannah.”
James added:
"I would also like to congratulate the winners in the other schools that entered and thank everyone who took part in the competition for the beautiful designs I received. Also, many thanks to teachers and parents, and all the sponsors for their support.”
