Simon Baynes, the Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, has welcomed the news that The Sun Trevor, near Llangollen has won the Community Pub Fundraising Hero Prize for Wales at the PubAid Community Pub Hero awards 2024.
Owners, Paul and Katy Jones, along with Mr Baynes, were at the ceremony in the House of Commons to accept the award which celebrates the work that the Sun Trevor has done fundraising for Nightingale House Hospice through their weekly pub quiz run by Maggie Smith. During the event Mr Baynes also introduced Paul and Katy Jones to Dr James Davies MP, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for the new Clwyd East constituency which will encompass Llangollen and Trevor after the next election. Mr Baynes and Paul and Katy Jones also met with Kevin Hollinrake MP, Minister for Enterprise and Markets, to celebrate The Sun Trevor’s success at fundraising as a business.
PubAid was founded in 2009 by a number of senior pub industry figures with the aim of highlighting the great work carried out by pubs across the UK. PubAid recognises the support that pubs can provide to people in their communities and these annual awards are a way of recognising the value they hold through their financial, practical, and emotional support for charities, good causes and local people.
The Sun Trevor saw off competition from more than 1,000 entries nationwide for the prestigious PubAid Community Pub Hero awards, now in its fifth year. Their pub quiz, ran by The Sun Trevor’s quizmaster Maggie Smith, has been held weekly for the last eight years and has raised over £27,500 for Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham.
Katy Jones, having received the award said:
“It's a fantastic thing to be acknowledged for this award. Our weekly quiz has the backing of the local community and it's great to have won an award for it. It’s been fantastic to be invited to the awards ceremony and being shown around the Houses of Parliament.”
Mr Baynes, speaking after the announcement, said:
“I am delighted that the Sun Trevor has won this award following my decision to nominate them. They thoroughly deserve it. They’ve raised £27,500 for the Nightingale House Hospice through their quizzes over the last nine years which is an incredibly impressive record that continues to enable Nightingale House Hospice to help people in our communities.
“They are real community heroes in our area of Clwyd South, and in the Llangollen area and I was pleased to be able to introduce them to Kevin Hollinrake MP, Minister for Enterprise and Markets, and to the Clwyd East candidate Dr James Davies MP.”
