On World Hearing Day, Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies is encouraging people to take advantage of free hearing tests on the High Street, including at Rhyl Specsavers.
World Hearing Day is an annual global advocacy event celebrated on March 3rd for raising awareness regarding hearing loss and promoting ear and hearing care, and calling for action to address hearing loss and related issues.
Although best known for providing services for eye health, Specsavers also carry out hearing tests and provide a wealth of knowledge in their stores and on their website on ear health and conditions.
James, who saw first-hand the work the store is doing to ensure people in the area receive quality hearing (and eye) care provision during a visit to the store last year, said:
“Specsavers are leading eye care specialists and provide the local community with a vital service, but what many people are not aware of is that they also deal with ear health and conditions.
“I was very pleased to meet the team last year to learn more about all the services they are providing, including the free hearing tests, and how their work makes such a difference to their patients’ lives.
“The impacts of hearing loss are broad and can be profound. They include a loss of the ability to communicate with others, which can lead to social isolation, loneliness and frustration, particularly among older people with hearing loss.
“A hearing test is a simple procedure and detecting problems early can make a world of difference to the outcome. I therefore encourage people to take advantage of the free tests being offered at Specsavers in Rhyl.”
A person is said to have hearing loss if they are not able to hear as well as someone with normal hearing, meaning hearing thresholds of 20 dB or better in both ears. It can be mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe or profound, and can affect one or both ears. Major causes of hearing loss include congenital or early onset childhood hearing loss, chronic middle ear infections, noise-induced hearing loss, age-related hearing loss, and ototoxic drugs that damage the inner ear.
Specsavers free hearing tests make it easy to keep track of your hearing health. The audiologists will test your hearing for free to find out how well you can hear and suggest the best solution for you. They will also keep in touch with you every 18 months to two years for a hearing check.
