Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies has applauded Coleg Llandrillo for the opportunities it is providing to people of all ages at its Rhyl and Rhos-on-Sea sites.
Last year, James visited the Rhyl campus again to hear first-hand from learners and staff about the investment in technology and learn more about the £14m Engineering Centre of Excellence.
During his visit he also called into the Health and Social Care Department, where he spoke at length with multiple students wanting to work in this vital sector and viewed the college's fully equipped simulated hospital ward.
More recently he visited the college’s Rhos-on-Sea campus, which is attended by a large number of students from the Vale of Clwyd.
During this visit he met staff and discussed the various courses on offer, including Tourism, Health and Social Care, and Counselling.
Commenting on his visits, James said:
“Students in the Vale of Clwyd are extremely fortunate to have easy access to such an impressive college.
“Both sites offer a diverse range of courses and benefit from state-of-the-art equipment and real-life working environments.
“The college also provides opportunities to study locally for degrees and professional qualifications, enabling more young people and mature learners to achieve their potential. A University Centre at the Rhos-on-Sea Campus provides excellent facilities for the Grŵp's Higher Education students.
“The students who attend the college seem to thrive and I am always pleased to read the positive news stories regarding their success.
“Only recently, the Counselling students at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhyl Campus celebrated their achievements in being the first cohort to complete the Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling, a two-year, part-time programme which is validated and awarded by Bangor University. It equips students with the skills and knowledge to be able to apply for registration and practice as a Professional Counsellor with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
“The counselling provision continues to grow - with Levels 2 to 5 now being offered at the Rhyl campus and with the provision of local placements in the Rhyl area increasing.
“Alongside the counselling provision, the Rhyl campus also provides further opportunities for development in the health sector. The popular Certificate of Higher Education in Social Care develops higher level knowledge and skills which enable the healthcare support workers to apply for increasing numbers of roles that extend their responsibilities. It also means that the healthcare support workers can carry out higher level duties within their post.”
This week, students from the Vale of Clwyd who are attending the college were among those awarded medals from 20 different categories at the Skills Competition Wales awards ceremony.
Molly Jones-Parry, of Rhuddlan and studying in Rhyl, received an award in the Inclusive Skills: Child Care category, whilst Angharad Heaven, of Denbigh and studying in Rhos, received an award in the Accountancy category.
James added:
"I would like to congratulate both Molly and Angharad on their success, which is testament to not only their hard work but all the hard work of the excellent teaching staff at the college.
“The college certainly has an innovative approach to learning, as was demonstrated when Denbighshire County Council's state-of-the-art robot 'Pepper' recently took centre stage at the college.
"This collaborative project includes Coleg Llandrillo Computing students programming Pepper, whilst Health & Social Care students are studying how the robot can help to combat loneliness in care.
“I wish to thank Coleg Llandrillo and all its staff for the tremendous work they are doing in providing a diverse range of first-rate courses, equipping people of all ages from across the Vale of Clwyd with the knowledge and skills they need to fulfill their potential and pursue their dreams.
“I would encourage all those considering the next step in their education to explore the opportunities on offer at Coleg Llandrillo.”
