Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies has welcomed progress on ambitious and exciting plans to develop the Queen’s Market site in Rhyl, following a further meeting with those leading the project this week.
In a virtual meeting from Westminster on Tuesday with Graham Boase, Denbighshire County Council’s Corporate Director, Tom Booty, Rhyl Going Forward Programme Manager, and Russell Vaughan, Project Manager at Denbighshire County Council, it was confirmed that the development is very much on course.
Denbighshire County Council, who are leading the project, has now purchased much of the plot enveloped by West Parade, Sussex Street, High Street and Queen Street and intends a pre-planning consultation this Summer.
James said:
“Having inspected the site back in January, I was pleased to discuss progress and opportunities today and was extremely encouraged and enthused by the way in which the plans are developing.
“In the nearly six months since my visit, much headway has been made, despite the difficult position the Covid-19 pandemic has placed us in. It was great to hear that despite current economic uncertainty, the Council remains fully committed to the regeneration of Rhyl and to completing this scheme in the timescales originally set.
“There is a dedicated team who are working exceptionally hard to ensure that this project is the huge success that Rhyl needs it to be. They have been tasked with a difficult challenge and they still have some way to go, but I am confident from what I heard today that it will be achieved.
“I have been behind this scheme from the onset and during today’s meeting I reiterated my support and commitment to help in any way that I can.
“This redevelopment will play an instrumental role in the revival of Rhyl, particularly the town centre which has struggled in recent years, so it is vital that we ensure that it receives all the support it needs.
“The potential for this scheme is vast and I have long believed that the development of the Queen’s Market can provide a crucial link between the town centre and the improved seafront and deliver a boost to help Rhyl get back on its feet.
“The success of similar developments at Altrincham and Birkenhead were referred to during the meeting and there is no reason why Rhyl can’t be the next big success story.”
