In support of Breast Cancer awareness month, Vale of Clwyd MP Dr James Davies met with a business owner last week who is helping cancer patients struggling with their image during treatment, to discuss the worries of those faced with a cancer diagnosis.
Rebecca Morgan Brennan, the owner of two specialist wig salons in North Wales and Cheshire, has been helping women in the Vale of Clwyd and beyond for over 12 years with the emotional and mental challenges of dealing with changes to skin and hair when going through cancer treatment.
James met with her to find out more about her work.
He said:
“Receiving a cancer diagnosis is truly devastating and treatment can be harsh, resulting in hair loss and other changes to the body. I was therefore pleased to hear of the specialist service Rebecca and her team is providing to women in the Vale of Clwyd, and in fact throughout North Wales, the North West and the West Midlands.
“Rebecca is also working with charities and the local community to bring much needed help to ensure that patients are provided with manageable solutions to the mentally challenging experience of hair loss, weight gain and any other unpleasant side effects of treatments, as well as fund raising for cancer charities.
“October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and I join Rebecca and her team in encouraging women to ensure they are checking their breasts, attending appointments and being vigilant.”
Rebecca, who trained with Trevor Sorbie MBE and has also attended many courses by wig suppliers from across the country, said:
“It was great to meet with James and to discuss the work we are doing to help cancer patients in the Vale of Clwyd and further afield.
“A wig is a patient’s best friend whilst there is little to no hair, but when the hair starts to grow back, there is a limbo situation. I find that people visiting my salon are pleased that their own hair is growing back, but they are still struggling with their image. It can often take up to 4-6 months for their hair, brows and lashes to grow back.
“This transition is hard; they are no longer seeing any clinicians and any pain can trigger fear. It can all feel tricky to get back on track.
“Women need to check themselves and understand that there is help out there during this very difficult time. It is so important to me that I can continue to help women with their hair loss journey.”
